In May of 2009 Black Marmot entered the Wonka Sound studio in Lowell, Massachusetts to begin work on their debut release, Run Home. The band had been playing regularly in Boston for more than a year and honing their sound in front of the local following. Run Home features some of the Marmots’ most intricate songs and incorporates a variety of sounds and styles. The album begins on a light note with roots in reggae and blues on Indifference and continues in that vein with the silky harmonies of Sunburn. Blue Mountain is the group’s venture into alt-country, but the songs quickly take a darker turn. A story of a stalker is told in A Few Degrees with a fierce chorus and haunting guitar. Run Home culminates with the sonic wall of Going Going Gone, Part II and then quietly drifts away like distant thunder with Hurricanes. The album reaches into the depths of Black Marmot’s creativity and showcases its diversity. Although each song could stand alone, together as Run Home they define the band and become a vibrant work of art.
